Občina Jesenice
Jesenice, Slovenia
Brief biography of partner
Jesenice is a Municipality in the northwest of Slovenia. It lies in the embrace of Mežakla plateau and Karavanks mountain range, situated along both banks of the Sava River. The Municipality is connected with Western Europe through the mighty Karavanks mountain range tunnel. Jesenice city is the administrative center of the Municipality. Once known for its sky-scraping chimneys and red dust due to the steel industry, which stayed, until today, well-developed and is the main source of income for many citizens of Municipality. In the high mountains of Karavanks, the beauty of nature reveals itself. Every spring, we can observe white plains of blossoming daffodils. There are also many hiking paths that can take us from one mountain hut to another, with proper gear, all year round. The heritage, which is becoming increasingly rich, still remains – technical, urban, natural, cultural and sports – which preserves, nurtures and upgrades the city. Today, the Municipality is the administrative centre of the Upper Sava Valley with an administrative unit, administration of defence, social work centre, labour office, district court and police station, which indicates that Jesenice is a modern and functional town with many advantages and opportunities.
Protection, rescue and assistance forces (Civil Protection) are the available capacities of the state, local communities, companies, institutions or other organizations for protection, rescue and assistance in the event of natural or other disasters. They are intended for rescue in the event of natural and other disasters, and for ensuring basic conditions for life after a disaster.
Role in the project
Due to the geological structure of soil, the biggest challenge and risk is posed by the many landslides occurring throughout the Municipality. The largest one is the 1.5 mio m3, Koroska Bela landslide. As such, Jesenice plans to equip the Koroska Bela landslide with additional devices to ensure people‘s safety. These include prevention, cooperation between Municipalities and abroad, capacity building, exercises, building resilience, and preparedness for natural and man-made disasters. Jesenice will provide relevant data needed for the tests and simulations, testing the environment as per the defined use cases and tests, and end users in the testing and validation.
